Pain, changes in the gums and a damaged or loose tooth are reasons to contact a dentist before the next routine checkup. Symptoms cannot establish the diagnosis at home, and the absence of pain does not guarantee healthy teeth.
Pain or new sensitivity
Describe when discomfort started, what triggers it and whether it lingers or wakes you. A cavity, crack, exposed root or inflamed pulp can cause overlapping symptoms. Do not wait for a scheduled cleaning if pain persists or worsens.
Bleeding or other mouth changes
Repeated bleeding, swelling, a persistent bad taste, loose teeth or a sore that does not heal should be assessed. These findings are not proof of one disease. Tell the dentist about medicines, dry mouth and changes in your health.
Damage and lost restorations
A broken tooth, loose bridge or missing filling needs a dental assessment even when it is painless. Avoid chewing on the damaged area and keep any detached piece. Do not use household glue to repair a tooth or restoration.
Know when dental care is not enough
Seek emergency medical help for difficulty breathing or swallowing or rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling. Fever with swelling calls for urgent assessment. Contact the selected office to confirm availability; this information is not a promise of round-the-clock care.
