Bleeding gums, recession or persistent bad breath can justify a periodontal assessment, but none proves that you need a deep cleaning. Scaling and root planing treats diagnosed gum disease below the gumline; it is not simply a stronger routine polish.
Symptoms are a starting point
Tell your dentist about bleeding, tenderness, loose teeth and changes in the bite. Gum disease can also progress with limited discomfort. A lack of pain is not a reason to skip an examination.
What confirms the need
The dentist or hygienist assesses gum pockets, bleeding, attachment and bone support, using X-rays when indicated. Plaque-induced gingivitis without loss of support differs from periodontitis. Treatment should follow these findings, not an online symptom checklist alone.
What treatment may involve
When indicated, deposits and affected root surfaces below the gums are cleaned, sometimes in more than one appointment and with local anaesthesia. Home care and reassessment are part of the plan. Further periodontal treatment or referral may be needed if disease remains.
What to ask
Ask which areas need treatment, what the measurements show, how discomfort will be managed and when the response will be checked. Discuss the maintenance interval and daily cleaning tools. Neither one cleaning nor antibiotics alone guarantees long-term control.
