Cleaning, examination and imaging answer different needs. They may be combined at a visit, but one is not a substitute for the others and not every visit requires new X-rays.
Cleaning removes deposits
Professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar and supports home care. It can help manage oral risk, but should not be advertised as preventing cancer, heart disease or pregnancy complications.
Examination evaluates findings
The dentist checks teeth, gums and oral tissues and considers symptoms and health history. A suspicious lesion may need reassessment or referral; a screening examination cannot guarantee that cancer is absent.
Imaging is selected
Images may clarify decay, roots or supporting bone where clinically indicated. The question, previous images and risk determine the type and timing. Conventional dental X-rays and CBCT are different examinations.
Leave with a clear next step
Ask what was found, which treatment is needed and which finding can be monitored. Agree on a review interval based on your needs. Report new symptoms rather than waiting for a fixed six-month date.
