Can Children Have Pulp or Root Canal Treatment?
Yes, some children need treatment of the soft tissue inside a tooth, but a primary tooth is not treated as a small adult tooth. The diagnosis, whether the tooth is primary or permanent, and its stage of development determine the options.

Primary teeth and permanent teeth are different

Primary teeth will be replaced, yet they can still matter for comfort, eating and maintaining space. The dentist assesses the tooth’s restorability, root resorption, infection and expected time until replacement. Newly erupted permanent teeth may have developing roots, which also changes treatment planning.

What the terms mean

A pulpotomy treats the crown portion of the pulp in selected cases where the remaining tissue can be preserved. A pulpectomy removes pulp tissue from the root canals of a primary tooth when indicated. Other vital-pulp approaches may suit particular findings. These are not interchangeable labels for every cavity.

When extraction may be considered

An unrestorable tooth, unsuitable root support or infection that cannot be managed predictably may require extraction. Ask whether a space-maintaining appliance is needed afterwards. Preserving a tooth is a goal only when the clinical circumstances support it.

Questions for parents

Ask which tooth type is involved, what the diagnosis is, which alternatives exist, whether referral is appropriate and how the tooth will be restored and monitored. Pain or swelling needs assessment; breathing or swallowing difficulty needs emergency medical help. Confirm which treatments the chosen office provides; this guide does not certify specialist availability.
