What Happens at a Preventive Dental Cleaning?
A preventive visit combines professional cleaning with an assessment of oral health. What is included depends on your findings and the appointment booked; it is not the same as treatment for established periodontitis.

Before cleaning

Review symptoms, health changes and medicines. The team assesses teeth and gums and explains which areas need attention. Gum measurements or imaging may be appropriate; neither X-rays nor a particular treatment is automatic.

Removing deposits

Professional instruments remove plaque and hardened tartar that brushing cannot remove. Polishing may remove selected surface stains. Tell the team about sensitivity so the technique and comfort measures can be adjusted.

Examination and prevention

The dentist reviews relevant findings and discusses hygiene, diet and risk. Fluoride or other preventive measures are selected individually, not added as a mandatory package for every age. Cleaning does not itself diagnose or cure every oral condition.

After the appointment

Ask what was found, which areas need home-care changes and when to return. Deep cleaning requires a separate periodontal diagnosis and plan. Persistent pain, bleeding or swelling should be reported rather than saved for the next routine appointment.
