Regular checkups provide a chance to assess changes before they become obvious at home. Six months is a familiar interval, not a universal rule or a guarantee that all problems will be prevented.
What a checkup can identify
The dentist assesses teeth, gums, restorations and oral tissues with your symptoms and history. Some findings need treatment; others need monitoring or referral. Early recognition can broaden options, but cannot promise painless or inexpensive treatment.
Prevention between visits
Professional care complements fluoride toothpaste, twice-daily brushing and daily interdental cleaning. Discuss technique, diet, tobacco and dry mouth. A cleaning is not a substitute for treating established disease.
Your return interval
Agree on timing based on caries and periodontal risk, current treatment and health. Imaging is also individual. Contact the dentist earlier for pain, swelling, persistent bleeding or a broken restoration rather than waiting for the next date.
