A first visit establishes your history, concerns and current oral findings. An examination, cleaning and treatment are not necessarily all completed in one appointment.
Bring information
Prepare medicines, allergies, health conditions, previous dental records and recent images. Confirm insurance and consent arrangements with the office. Tell the team about pain, anxiety, communication or accessibility needs before the visit.
Examination and explanations
The dentist reviews teeth, gums, existing restorations and oral tissues. Imaging is selected only when needed. Ask what findings mean and whether additional tests or referral are needed; do not assume a new patient must receive every available X-ray.
Agree on next steps
Discuss priorities, alternatives, expected stages, risks and written costs before treatment. Ask whether cleaning is appropriate now, what needs a separate appointment and when results will be reviewed. Neither same-day treatment nor a completely painless experience should be promised in advance.
After the visit
Leave with instructions and a way to ask questions. Confirm the next appointment and your selected office. New pain or swelling should be reported promptly, not kept for an already scheduled routine checkup.
